Glossary

Handyman terms in plain English.

The words that show up on a quote, explained, so you can read ours and compare it to anyone else's.

Punch list

The running list of small unfinished items around a home. We quote and price the whole list as one job, done in a single visit.

Joint compound (“mud”)

The paste that fills drywall seams and holes. Applied in thin, even coats, sanded flush, then primed before paint.

Stud

The vertical framing behind the drywall, usually every 16 inches. Anything heavy, like a TV mount or shelf, anchors into it.

Strike plate

The metal plate on the frame that the latch catches. Shifting it a few millimeters fixes most doors that won't stay closed.

Weather-stripping

The compressible seal around a door or window. Worn weather-stripping is the most common cause of a draft you feel but can't see.

Caulk vs. sealant

Paintable caulk closes trim gaps. Silicone sealant stays flexible and waterproof, which is what belongs around tubs, sinks, and showers.

Flat-pack

Furniture shipped as panels and fasteners. Assembly matters: square, level, and anchored to the wall if it's tall.

Shutoff valve

The small valve that stops water to a faucet or toilet. A worn one is often why a fixture drips or won't fully shut off.
